Description
Morgan’s 4/4 remains instantly recognisable since it was first introduced in 1936. Up until this date all Morgans had been three wheelers powered by motorcycle engines. The first Ford engined cars were introduced in 1955 with the 1172cc 100E engine but by 1968 they had the desirable 1600 Ford Kent engine which allowed it to reach over 100mph.
Based around a box-section chassis equipped with independent ‘sliding pillar’ suspension, a leaf sprung live rear axle, disc brakes on the front and power transmitted to the road via the all synchromesh 4 speed gearbox it creates a hugely enjoyable driving experience. Its iconic styling in thin gauge metal over the ash frame results in a car weighing around the 700kg mark. It takes little imagination to realise why these cars are so entertaining to drive.
TUP 825K (chassis no. B2736) was supplied new by I & J MacDonald on May 1st 1972. The most notable of the 5 owners is a Mr R Cawthorne who cherished the car for a remarkable forty one years from 1977 until 2018. Enhanced and improved throughout its life TUP 8265K has gained an alternator, four into one exhaust manifold, sports camshaft, Kenlowe fan, Mintex brakes and perhaps most notably highly desirable twin weber carburettors. The mounting of these necessitated the addition of a ‘super - sports’ style air intake which only enhances the sporting look of this Morgan. The bodywork has been looked after superbly with four new aluminium wings mounted in 2006. The wings are often a weak area on Morgans and all four on this car are in superb condition. Mr Cawthorne’s successor continued to care for TUP 8265K in a similar manner with replacing the ignition system, carburettor adjustment, rolling road tuning (which recorded 119 bhp and 120 Ibft of torque) as well as replacement heater, oil cooler, Brantz trip meter and 0-8000 rpm rev counter.
The high quality metallic paint finish in Midnight Blue with characterful leather bonnet strap gives the impression the car is decades younger than its 53 years. Supplied with full weather equipment, the side screens stored in a quality bespoke upholstered case, car cover, rebuilt steering box and history file this is a wonderful example of a true British classic. M.O.T exempt and taxed as a historic vehicle this would be both an exciting and economical classic to use every day.
